At least two firefighters have lost their lives, and hundreds of residents have been evacuated as multiple wildfires continue to rage across southeastern South Korea. The fires, fueled by dry winds, have affected regions including the rural county of Sancheong and the city of Gimhae.

In Sancheong, approximately 260 individuals sought refuge in temporary shelters as flames rapidly spread through the area. The wildfire has consumed over 500 hectares (1,200 acres) of land, with only 35% containment achieved despite the deployment of nearly 1,600 emergency workers, 35 helicopters, and numerous vehicles. The challenging mountainous terrain and persistent strong winds have hindered firefighting efforts.

The national government has declared disaster zones in the affected regions, including North and South Gyeongsang provinces and the city of Ulsan. Acting President Choi Sang-mok has pledged comprehensive support to extinguish the fires and assist those impacted.

Authorities have issued the highest-level fire warnings in 12 locations, encompassing North and South Gyeongsang provinces, Busan, and Daejeon, as a precautionary measure.

The situation remains critical, with emergency services working tirelessly to contain the blazes and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
