Zimbabwean Man Arrested in South Africa with Stolen MP’s R4 Million Car
A 42-year-old Zimbabwean man has been arrested in South Africa after being found in possession of a vehicle worth R4 million, which was stolen from a member of parliament. The suspect, who was attempting to flee to Zimbabwe without a passport, was apprehended near Polokwane and now faces charges under South Africa’s Immigration Act.
The arrest was confirmed by the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, who praised the swift action of the SAPS Provincial Anti-Smuggling Task Team. According to Limpopo Police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the stolen vehicle was taken from a parking lot at Menlyn Mall, Pretoria, on Thursday afternoon, August 7, 2024. The suspect was caught later that evening in the Lebowakgomo area, outside Polokwane, as he attempted to smuggle the vehicle into Zimbabwe.
“This successful operation underscores the commitment of the South African Police Service to uphold justice and security,” said Colonel Ledwaba. “The suspect is currently in custody, and further investigations are underway to address the full scope of the crime and identify any potential accomplices.”
The suspect has been charged with possession of a presumed stolen motor vehicle and violation of the Immigration Act after it was determined that he was in the country illegally. He is scheduled to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
