Limpopo police have arrested five suspects in connection with stock theft in the Vhembe District. The suspects, aged between 18 and 58, are scheduled to appear at the Makhado Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The arrest was the result of an intelligence-led operation during which police intercepted two vehicles suspected of illegally transporting livestock. Officers discovered cattle in the trailer of one of the vehicles. The occupants failed to present valid documents or offer a credible explanation for the origin of the animals.

Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that three cattle were recovered and the suspects were arrested on the spot.

Provincial Police Commissioner in Limpopo commended the swift response by officers and reiterated the ongoing challenge stock theft poses. “This crime continues to have a devastating impact on rural economies and livelihoods,” she said.

Stock theft remains a growing concern in South Africa, with over 130,000 cases reported annually. The crime is often linked to organised syndicates and, in some cases, escalates to violence and murder.
