77-Year-Old Nigerian Uber Driver Shot, Killed in U.S.
A 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver was shot and killed while picking up a passenger in the United States, sparking outrage and renewed calls for better safety measures for rideshare drivers.
According to police, the incident occurred late at night when the driver was on duty. A 22-year-old passenger in the backseat was also seriously injured, suffering gunshot wounds to the arm, stomach, and chest. He remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
Uber released a statement expressing condolences: “Our hearts break for the driver’s family and loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss. We’ve reached out to police to offer our support as they work to bring those responsible for this heinous act of violence to justice.”
Witnesses reported seeing the suspect’s getaway vehicle, described as a newer model dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee, possibly bearing Massachusetts license plates. The vehicle was last seen fleeing down Sansom Street.
Another rideshare driver, shaken by the news, said, “I’m so sorry that somebody had to lose his life over this. I just hope it’s not one of the guys that I used to talk to.”
Fabian Romero, of the Independent Drivers Guild, emphasized the growing concern over driver safety: “Right now, we’re forgotten. Nobody sees the things we live day by day.” He said the group will continue to push for stronger safety protocols and support the victim’s family. “If there’s anything we can do, we’re going to do it.”
Local residents say they’re troubled by the rise in gun violence. “I woke up to it and it was the first thing I saw on my phone,” said Mino Brone, who lives nearby. “There’s never a dull moment on this street.”
Michelle Kao, a business owner in the area, added, “It’s really sad. You should feel safe in Rittenhouse. A lot of people rely on Ubers, especially with train service.”
Police continue their investigation and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
