The Katsina State Government has committed a total of N7.6 billion to various electricity-related projects across the state, with a strong emphasis on renewable energy, particularly solar power.

Malam Faruq Lawal-Jobe, the Deputy Governor, disclosed this to journalists in Katsina while outlining the achievements of Governor Dikko Radda’s administration in the energy sector.

One of the key projects, according to Lawal-Jobe, is the installation of 74 kilometers of solar-powered street lights within Katsina metropolis. In addition, an 11-kilometer stretch of solar street lighting is being provided from Al-Qalam University Roundabout to Darma Rice Mill.

“In an effort to provide a sustainable power solution to critical facilities of government, viable mini-grid solar-powered projects are ongoing at General Hospital Katsina, Government House, and the State Secretariat Complex at the cost of N3.8 billion,” the deputy governor stated.

He also revealed that several other electrification projects have been executed in communities across the state. These include the supply and installation of transformers, cables, equipment repairs, and routine maintenance.

Additional efforts include changing the power source from ‘Yan Albasa, Eka, and Kadandani to Kuraye, covering 17 kilometers, to restore electricity in Charanchi Local Government Area.

Lawal-Jobe also noted enhancements to the state’s security lighting system through the construction of Japarana Concrete Technology in the median strips of Ring Road Phase I ‘A’ and ‘B’ in Katsina metropolis.

Repairs have also been made to vandalized power infrastructure, including an eight-kilometer high tension line from Iyatawa, Cikakoshi, Mahuta, and Remawa, aimed at restoring electricity supply in Iyatawa ward of Rimi Local Government Area.

The deputy governor further announced the award of contracts for the digital mapping of power lines and GPS tracking of all state-procured line materials and transformers.

Other projects listed include the replacement of 33KV breakers and accessories to restore power supply at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina.

Lawal-Jobe concluded by reaffirming the Radda administration’s dedication to expanding electricity access in rural areas. “Gov. Radda remains committed to expanding electricity access in rural areas to stimulate economic activities and improve the living standard of our people,” he said.
