Ghana Moves to Ban Foreigners from Small-Scale Gold Mining by May

0 20

Ghana, Africa’s top gold producer, has announced a ban on foreign involvement in its artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector, effective from May 1, 2025. The move is part of a broader crackdown on illicit trade and a strategy to tighten control over the country’s gold exports.

According to the Bank of Ghana, artisanal and small-scale mining contributed significantly to the nation’s gold output, which made up 57% of total export revenue last year. Authorities say the ban will help formalize the sector, curb illegal activities, and ensure more benefits flow to local communities.

While cracking down on illegal mining operations, the government has extended a 12-month lease for Gold Fields’ Damang mine, signaling continued support for regulated large-scale operators.

Ghana’s actions come as global demand for gold remains strong, and the government pushes for greater transparency and value retention within its mining industry.
