“Major Incident Declared After Toxic Chemical Spill in West Midlands Canal”
A major incident has been declared in the West Midlands following a toxic chemical spill in a canal, prompting urgent warnings from local authorities. The spill, reported in the Pleck area of Walsall, involves potentially dangerous substances, including sodium cyanide, which is now being tested by the Environment Agency.
Walsall Council has cautioned the public about the health risks associated with direct contact with the contaminated water. Sodium cyanide, described by the UK Health Security Agency as a white, crystalline substance used in various industries, can cause severe symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and even loss of consciousness if ingested or inhaled.
In response to the spill, Walsall Council has advised residents to avoid an extended stretch of the canal and its towpaths, spanning from the Walsall lock flight to the lock flights at Rushall, Ryders Green, and Perry Barr. This precautionary measure is crucial to ensure public safety while the Environment Agency conducts further tests.
The council was first alerted to the spill by the Environment Agency on Monday, after the chemical was found to have entered the canal. Authorities have urged anyone who has come into contact with the water and is feeling unwell to seek medical advice immediately by calling 111 or, in more severe cases, 999.
Council leader Councillor Garry Perry emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Our priority is the safety of our residents. We are working closely with our partners to manage this incident, which has been declared a major incident. For your own safety, please avoid the affected area of the canal and its towpaths.”
The incident has prompted a coordinated response from multiple agencies, including West Midlands Police and Fire Services, the Canal and Rivers Trust, Severn Trent Water, and local councils. While the drinking water supply remains unaffected, the council has advised against consuming any fish taken from the canal.
As authorities continue to address the situation, the community is urged to remain vigilant and adhere to all safety guidelines issued by local officials.
