The Acting Ambassador of Italy to Nigeria, Mr. Iacopo Foti, has commended the strengthening economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties between Italy and Nigeria, expressing hope that these bonds will yield concrete actions and investments in the near future.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Foti gave the commendation during the celebration of the 79th Italian National Day held on Sunday night in Abuja.
He noted that the occasion was not only to mark Italy’s national anniversary but also to celebrate the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Italy and Nigeria since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960.
“Nigeria, a land of incredible diversity, dynamic energy, and immense potential, has become since the 70s and 80s a second home for many Italians that have contributed to the development of the country in variety of sectors,” he said.
Foti described Nigeria as a “cultural powerhouse,” lauding its leadership in art, literature, and film both in Africa and globally. He added that Italy, with its rich cultural heritage, is keen to expand its engagement with the African continent, particularly Nigeria.
“We are proud to be a part of this welcoming and vibrant society. I appreciate the dedication and hard work of the Nigerian people, their entrepreneurial spirit and the warmth hospitality towards the Italian community,” he said.
“Our relationship is built on a foundation of mutual respect and understanding. We see this in the increasing economic ties between our countries. We see it in the growing cultural exchanges, the shared passion for football, and the increasing number of Nigerians who study and visit Italy every year as enthusiastic students and tourists.”
Foti also acknowledged the growing number of Italians who are drawn to Nigeria’s rich culture and history, and who now consider the country their second home.
He highlighted further shared similarities, including thriving movie industries, a common sense of aesthetics rooted in tradition, and vibrant fashion sectors.
“Italy and Nigeria are both non-individualistic societies where family and friends play a central role in the lives of the people,” he said. “We are both historically a migrant society that have not only built fortune abroad but always kept our hearts close to the motherland.”
He emphasized that the cultural similarities between the two countries foster mutual understanding.
“In the end, both countries are not so different, on the contrary they are quite similar, that is why we understand and appreciate each other,” he said.
Foti also pointed out that both countries often suffer from global stereotypes and misperceptions.
“Finally, both our societies are sometimes victims of stereotypes and misperceptions that affect our reputation at a global level; countries like ours, so rich in culture and talent, are often the prey of a simplistic way of life,” he said.
Quoting renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, he added: “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”
The envoy praised the Italian community in Nigeria for integrating successfully, contributing through the introduction of Italian food products, marbles, stones, design, fashion, and advanced technology.
“As we look ahead, we are optimistic about the future of Italy-Nigeria relations. There is so much more we can achieve together. We can deepen our economic partnerships, our scientific and technology collaboration and of course we can expand and intensify our cultural and academic exchanges,” Foti said.
Guests at the celebration were treated to a variety of savory Italian cuisines and drinks.
