Thousands of British Muslims and community members gathered at Trafalgar Square on Sunday for a vibrant public celebration of Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s most important festivals, highlighting unity, compassion, and cultural expression.

The “Eid on the Square” event, hosted by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, featured live performances, Islamic art, family-friendly activities, and a showcase of cultural heritage from across the UK. This marks the first time the Eid al-Adha celebration has taken place at this iconic location.

Among participating organizations were Muslim Aid, the Yunus Emre Institute, the British Islamic Medical Association, and others offering health, education, and community services.

Mohtasim Pal, chair of the Muslim Association within the British Transport Police, called the event a meaningful way to connect with people from all walks of life. “We’ve had families engaging, kids trying on police hats, and many asking how to join the force or report crimes,” he told Anadolu.

Khalid Javid, CEO of Muslim Aid, said the event reflected a shared message of unity and hope. “We’re spreading the message of humanity, of change, of hope,” he said, noting the group’s new children’s competition “A World You Want to See,” which encourages kids to imagine a better world 40 years from now.

Javid also acknowledged the ongoing humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan, themes echoed in Mayor Khan’s speech, which urged continued solidarity with those affected by conflict.

For Ibrahim Ferullo, CEO of the social enterprise Mentyoo, the event was a platform to reach underserved communities. “We’re here to offer free mentoring for young people from underrepresented backgrounds,” he said. “There isn’t always support for those from immigrant families, and we’re helping to fill that gap.”

From cultural performances to conversations about dreams and identity, the celebration offered a powerful space for sharing, learning, and building community in the heart of London.
