Oba of Benin Honours Citizens With Chieftaincy Titles
The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has conferred chieftaincy titles on several distinguished individuals to reward their service and encourage continued dedication to the Benin Kingdom.
In a statement on Sunday, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, said the appointments reflect the monarch’s commitment to strengthening traditional governance through discipline and community service.
Among the honourees was Chief Godwin Emovon Ihama, who received the title Obariyekagbon of Benin for his contributions to society and cultural preservation.
Others included Chief Kenneth Osadebamwen Iduriase (Obazuhunwa of Benin), Chief Osayawe Friday Odia (Eriyo of Benin), Chief Nosakhare Osadiaye (Uheloro of Benin), and Chief Charles Agbonavbare Asemota (Osarodion of Benin).
Chief Patrick Okao was honoured as Oka’ayagbona of Benin, while Chief John Aiyamenkhue became the Obayangbon of Benin. In the latest confirmations, Osaigbovo Osamwonyi was affirmed as Akenuwa of Benin, and Chief Stephen Amadin as Obamarhiaye of Benin. Chief Uyi Okungbowa also received the title Ogua of Benin.
The conferment ceremony took place at Ugha Ozolua within the Oba’s Palace, marked by rich cultural displays and traditional rites.
Notably, the new Akenuwa, Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, drew admiration for his passion and vibrant presence, reflecting deep respect for Benin heritage.
Each newly installed chief participated in the Ekpomwen-abor thanksgiving ritual, expressing gratitude to the monarch and pledging loyalty to Benin traditions.
Sacred performances by the Emehe and Osikhian groups added spiritual depth to the ceremony, while family and friends celebrated with songs and praise.
Speaking at the event, Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin, highlighted the cultural significance of the rite. Chief Osayawe Odia, the new Eriyo of Benin, expressed gratitude to God, the Oba, and the ancestors, vowing to uphold Benin values with honour and integrity.
