NiMet Forecasts Nationwide Thunderstorms, Rainfall for Three Days
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday, June 16 to Wednesday, June 18, urging the public to take safety precautions.
In its latest weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet predicted early morning thunderstorms in parts of the northern region on Monday, with moderate rainfall likely in Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba States. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are expected in Borno, Zamfara, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, and other northern states.
For the North-Central region, the agency anticipates morning thunderstorms across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa States, with similar weather conditions continuing into the afternoon and evening.
Southern states such as Ebonyi, Abia, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun, Rivers, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River are expected to experience morning rain showers, followed by widespread thunderstorms and rain across the region later in the day.
On Tuesday, the forecast includes morning thunderstorms in Kebbi, Kaduna, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Zamfara, with additional rain expected in Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Borno, Katsina, and Sokoto by evening.
In North-Central Nigeria, morning thunderstorms are likely in the FCT, Plateau, and Nasarawa, with expected rain extending to Kogi, Kwara, Niger, and Benue later in the day. Southern areas including Ogun, Ondo, Cross River, Rivers, and Lagos may see early rains, followed by broader rainfall coverage in the afternoon and evening.
By Wednesday, NiMet projects morning thunderstorms in Kebbi, Zamfara, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba, with continued rainfall expected in Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and other northern states as the day progresses.
The North-Central region will begin the day with partly cloudy skies and sunshine intervals, while thunderstorms are likely later over Benue, Kogi, Niger, and the FCT. In the South, morning showers are expected in Ogun and Lagos, with isolated thunderstorms forecast across much of the region in the evening.
NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede rainfall in several areas, advising the public to take safety measures. These include securing loose objects, avoiding driving in heavy rain, disconnecting electrical appliances, and staying away from tall trees.
Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport-specific forecasts from NiMet for proper flight planning.
