Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalised with a severe case of gastroenteritis, casting doubt on his participation in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup.

The French star missed Los Blancos’ opening match on Wednesday due to illness. On Thursday, the club confirmed that he had been admitted to hospital for further tests and treatment.

“Our player Kylian Mbappe is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment,” Real Madrid said in an official statement.

Head coach Xabi Alonso addressed Mbappe’s condition after the team’s 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal, stating the forward had experienced “significant viral issues” and would be re-evaluated ahead of their next game.

“We’ll have to see how he feels,” Alonso said. “We’ll wait and assess closer to the game.”

Real Madrid’s next fixture is against Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday, followed by a final group stage match against Red Bull Salzburg on June 26.

Mbappe’s potential absence is a major concern for the Spanish giants as they aim to secure their place in the knockout rounds of the tournament.
