Magnitude 4.7 Earthquake Hits Northern Japan, No Damage Reported
A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 106 kilometers north of Tatsugo, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. As of the time of reporting, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage.
Japan, situated at the convergence of four tectonic plates, frequently experiences seismic activity. The country is also home to around 100 active volcanoes.
Japan’s vulnerability to earthquakes was tragically underscored in 2011 when a powerful magnitude 9.0 quake and tsunami claimed over 15,000 lives and triggered a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima power plant.
