A 35-year-old man has died after running onto the runway at Milan Bergamo International Airport and entering a plane’s engine, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

Police told Sky News that the individual, who is believed to have neither been a passenger nor an airport employee, appeared to have voluntarily approached and entered the engine of a Ryanair aircraft that was preparing for departure.

Witnesses said airport security and police attempted to stop the man but were unable to reach him in time.

The incident caused immediate suspension of airport operations on the affected runway. An investigation has been launched to determine how the man accessed the restricted area and whether security protocols were breached.

Authorities have not released the man’s identity, and his motive remains unclear.
