First £1 Coins Featuring King Charles III Enter UK Circulation
The first £1 coins featuring the effigy of King Charles III have officially entered circulation across the UK, marking a historic moment for British currency. Nearly three million of the newly designed coins will be distributed through banks and post offices this week, giving collectors and the public a chance to acquire them.
The reverse side of the £1 coin showcases a pair of British bees, symbolizing King Charles’ dedication to conservation and the environment. The obverse side features his official coin portrait.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coins at The Royal Mint, expressed excitement over the release. “It is an honour to reveal King Charles III’s £1 coin in circulation. We hope the designs spark important conversations about conservation,” she said.
The £1 coin is part of a broader set of designs inspired by the UK’s wildlife, reflecting the king’s environmental advocacy. Other coins in the series include a 1p featuring a hazel dormouse, a 2p with a red squirrel, and a £2 coin adorned with national flowers.
These coins will circulate alongside older versions bearing Queen Elizabeth II’s likeness, gradually replacing them as they wear out. The release of King Charles III’s £1 coin follows the introduction of banknotes with his portrait, which entered circulation in June.
