Trump Pledges to Stop UAE Deportation of Afghan Refugees

US President Donald Trump has vowed to intervene in a reported plan by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to deport Afghan refugees back to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

“I will try to save them, starting right now,” Trump declared in a message posted Sunday on Truth Social, where he also shared a news report detailing the deportation plan.

According to the report by Just the News, UAE officials unexpectedly visited a refugee camp in Abu Dhabi and informed 32 Afghan men, women, and children that they would soon be returned to Afghanistan. The refugees, who have been confined at the facility for four years, allegedly had their passports seized by camp authorities.

The development has sparked concern among international human rights advocates. Richard Bennett, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, issued a statement Saturday urging the UAE to halt the deportation plans.

“Afghanistan is not safe, and those forced to return are at significant risk of persecution and violent reprisals,” Bennett warned, adding that any forced return would violate international protection standards.

The Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, following the collapse of the U.S.-backed government and the withdrawal of American forces.
