The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested three suspected members of a notorious “one-chance” robbery gang believed to be responsible for the abduction and killing of 23-year-old Grace Godwin Alewa in Abuja.

Grace, a petrol station attendant from Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, was on her way home from work on Friday, July 11, when she boarded a commercial vehicle unknowingly operated by kidnappers posing as transporters. She was abducted, robbed, and later killed. Her body was found the next morning along Abubakar Street in the Alex Ekwueme District, Jabi.

The suspects allegedly demanded a ransom of ₦1 million from her family. It remains uncertain if the ransom was paid before her death. She was rushed to a nearby hospital by police officers but was declared dead on arrival.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, especially after false narratives on social media claimed she was involved in a transactional relationship. Her family and colleagues refuted the claims, describing her as a hardworking woman returning from duty.

In response, FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, ordered a tactical crackdown on criminal syndicates operating “one-chance” vehicles across the city. A special team, the Scorpion Squad led by ACP Victor Godfrey, launched intelligence-led raids between July 12 and 26, resulting in the arrest of three suspects:

  • Sunday Uduma a.k.a. Akidi (39), from Ohafia LGA, Abia State
  • Godwin Eze (39), from Cross River State
  • Nnaiji Ikenna (33), from Imo State

According to police sources, the arrests were based on “actionable reconstructive digital intelligence.” The suspects have reportedly confessed to the crime, and a black Mazda 323 used in the operation has been recovered.

Further investigation revealed that Sunday Uduma had previously been arrested in February 2024 for a similar one-chance robbery and was remanded at Keffi Correctional Facility. How he was released and returned to criminal activities remains under investigation.

All suspects are currently in custody and will be prosecuted after investigations are concluded.
