At least 11 people have been hospitalized following a stabbing attack at a Walmart store in northern Michigan on Saturday evening, officials confirmed.

According to a statement from Munson Medical Center, all 11 victims are currently being treated at the hospital’s emergency department, which is handling a “higher-than-usual volume” of patients.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this event, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action,” the hospital said.

The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. (2100 GMT) in Traverse City, a small city on the shores of Lake Michigan with a population of about 15,000.

Authorities quickly responded to what they described as an “active incident.” Michigan State Police initially urged residents to avoid the area but later confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. The Walmart and surrounding businesses were temporarily cordoned off as law enforcement and emergency crews worked the scene.

Local news outlet UpNorthLive reported a significant police presence in the area throughout Saturday evening, with witnesses initially claiming more than five people were injured before official numbers were confirmed.

Authorities have not yet released details about the suspect, motive, or the condition of the victims. The investigation remains ongoing.
