Arise TV Anchor Vimbai Mutinhiri-Ekpeyong Raises Concerns Over Imported Ginger in Nigerian Marketsp
Arise TV anchor and media personality Vimbai Mutinhiri-Ekpeyong has voiced concerns about the quality and origin of ginger roots currently being sold in Nigerian markets, adding her voice to a growing conversation about food authenticity and safety.
Her comments come shortly after Ify Rhodes-Vivour, wife of politician Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, publicly raised similar concerns. In a post earlier today, Ify remarked that the ginger available in markets was lacking its characteristic spice and aroma, sparking online discourse.
Taking to her Instagram page, Vimbai echoed these sentiments, saying she was alarmed by the increasing presence of unusually large ginger roots, which she suspects are imported from China.
“I’m wondering how we got to the point where we are now importing ginger—something you can grow in your backyard,” Vimbai said in a video shared on her Instagram.
“These massive, larger-than-life ginger roots from China… I can’t even tell you about the taste because I didn’t buy it. I’m not putting that in my body. It might be ignorant, that’s possible—but it’s not the type of ginger I’m used to. And until I do more research, it’s not something I’ll be consuming.”
Her statement has resonated with many Nigerians who are also concerned about the quality of food items, especially in light of increasing imports and questionable agricultural practices.
