FUT Minna Student Drowns in Fishpond During Hiking Trip

Oluwaseyi Adebayo, a 400-level student at the Federal University of Technology Minna (FUT Minna), tragically drowned after falling into a fishpond during a hiking trip on August 10.

Adebayo, a student in the Department of Animal Production, was biking with friends near the Talba Dam when he lost his footing and fell into the pond, leading to his untimely death.

According to reports, local residents initially refused to release Adebayo’s body to university authorities, insisting that specific rituals be performed to ensure the safety of his seven hiking companions.

The university resisted the demand at first, but intervention by concerned individuals resulted in the payment of a fee and the provision of a white ram to complete the ritual.

Lydia Legbo, a spokesperson for the university, later clarified that the institution was unaware of the incident until it was reported.

In a condolence message, the Student Union Government (SUG) expressed deep sorrow over Adebayo’s death, stating: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Oluwaseyi David, a 400-level student in the Department of Animal Production (SAAT), who tragically passed away during a hiking event with his classmates near the Talba Dam in GK Off-campus.”

The incident has left the university community mourning the loss of a promising student.
