The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the country between Monday and Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods in several states.

Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in parts of the northern region, including Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina on Monday morning. Afternoon rains will likely extend to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba.

“Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” NiMet stated.

In the central region, states such as Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa will experience cloudy mornings with light to moderate rainfall, with Plateau identified as a high-risk area for flooding.

For the south, NiMet predicts light to moderate rains in Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

On Tuesday, the agency forecasts sunny skies with patches of cloud cover in the north, while thunderstorms and rains persist in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and surrounding areas.

“Central and southern regions will continue experiencing moderate rainfall,” it added.

By Wednesday, northern states are expected to have sunny mornings with thunderstorms developing later in the day. The central region will experience cloudy skies and moderate rains, while the southern states, including Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, are likely to see morning showers and heavier rains by the afternoon.

NiMet advised residents in flood-prone areas to be on alert, activate emergency responses, and avoid driving during heavy rains. The agency also urged the public to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and take precautions against strong winds and cold nighttime temperatures.

It further cautioned against seeking shelter under tall trees during storms and advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight planning.
