The Premier League has clarified why Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon was sent off during Monday’s match against Liverpool at St James’ Park.

Gordon was initially shown a yellow card by referee Simon Hooper in the first half for a challenge on Virgil van Dijk. However, following a review at the pitchside monitor on the advice of VAR, Hooper upgraded the punishment to a straight red card.

“After VAR review, the referee overturned his on-field decision of a yellow card to Anthony Gordon,” the Premier League Match Centre posted on social media.

The Match Centre also relayed Hooper’s explanation: “After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge.

“The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4’s calf.

“My final decision is red card to Newcastle United number 10.”

Liverpool went on to win the match 3-2, with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha scoring a dramatic winner in the 100th minute.
