The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has urged African nations to embrace digitisation, build inclusive connectivity, and harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to prepare a future-ready workforce.

Delivering a keynote address at GITEX Nigeria 2025 in Abuja, Dr. Tijani stressed the importance of collective action and sustainable infrastructure to ensure the continent is not left behind.

“Africa must not just participate in the AI revolution, but shape it on its own terms. We need clean energy-driven infrastructure and meaningful connectivity to unlock the full potential of our people,” he declared.

Setting the tone for the event, the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi CCIE, called for unity in Africa’s AI journey. He highlighted the need for shared infrastructure, homegrown algorithms that reflect African values, and strong policies that will position the continent as an active player in the global technology space.

In his words, “We cannot afford to build our computing power in silos; Africa must unite to create shared infrastructure.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also addressed participants, unveiling the state’s bold vision for technology growth. He explained that Lagos continues to invest heavily in education infrastructure to prepare young talents for the digital economy, while also creating an enabling environment for startups and innovators to thrive.

The global dimension of GITEX Nigeria was underscored by Ms. Trixie LohMirmand, Executive Vice President of Dubai World Trade Centre and CEO of KAOUN International, who described Nigeria as a vital hub for innovation.

“The power of collaboration between Nigeria and global partners will drive innovation, attract investment, and position Africa at the forefront of the digital economy,” she said.

GITEX Nigeria 2025, hosted by NITDA, has brought together government leaders, innovators, investors, and technology experts from around the world to explore opportunities in artificial intelligence, fintech, smart cities, digital health, and other transformative sectors.
