Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has described the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a legacy that continues to foster national unity and development.
Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Affairs, Mr. Moshood Olalekan, stated this on Friday at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch B Stream II corps members held at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Ede.
He said the scheme had served as a unifying platform that brings together young Nigerians from diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.
“The scheme has greatly strengthened our bonds of unity and also fostered national development in the country. We will continue to ensure that the orientation camp remains conducive, secure and adequately resourced for the training and welfare of corps members,” Adeleke said.
According to him, the service year provides corps members with opportunities to contribute to the growth and development of the state in areas such as education, healthcare, rural development, agriculture, and community service.
“My administration will continue to collaborate with security agencies in order to guarantee the safety of corps members in the state. Also, your conduct and attitude throughout the service year will reflect not only you as individuals but the institution you represent and the nation at large,” he added.
Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Osun, Mr. Agbor Obim, disclosed that 1,420 corps members, comprising 679 males and 723 females, were deployed to the state. He added that another 776, made up of 375 males and 401 females, were dislodged from Lagos State, bringing the total number of corps members in camp to 2,196.
Obim urged corps members to strictly adhere to camp rules and regulations, stressing that discipline, dedication, commitment, and obedience remained the hallmark of the scheme.
“I want to say that any form of indiscipline such as truancy, drug abuse, hooliganism, and insubordination will not be tolerated and attracts appropriate sanctions. The scheme is designed to instill discipline, resilience, civic responsibility, leadership and equip corps members for the challenges of national development,” Obim said.
He also advised the corps members to be security-conscious and avoid unnecessary risks that could endanger their lives, noting that the orientation camp remains a regimented environment where discipline is paramount.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the oath of allegiance was administered on the corps members by the Chief Judge of Osun State, Justice Adepele Ojo.
