German Chancellor Scholz Visits Solingen After Fatal Knife Attack

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Solingen on Monday morning, three days after a fatal knife attack claimed three lives during a city festival.

Scholz was welcomed at the city hall by Solingen Mayor Tim Kurzbach. Also in attendance were North Rhine-Westphalia’s State Premier Hendrik Wüst, Deputy Premier Mona Neubaur, and Interior Minister Herbert Reul.

Following their meeting, a commemoration ceremony for the victims is planned at the site of the attack in the city center. Scholz is also set to meet with emergency personnel involved in the incident.

The attack, which occurred on Friday evening, left three dead and eight others injured, four of them critically. A 26-year-old Syrian suspect has been in custody since Sunday, facing charges of murder and suspected involvement with the terrorist group Islamic State.

Scholz condemned the attack, calling it a “terrible crime” and vowed that justice would be served.

After his visit to Solingen, the Chancellor is scheduled to continue his tour of the Ruhr district, visiting a chemical park in Marl, a technology hub in Bochum, and an allotment garden in Castrop-Rauxel.
