President Bola Tinubu has approved posthumous presidential pardons for the late nationalist, Herbert Macaulay, and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Major General Mamman Vatsa, along with 15 others.

The decision was part of a broad clemency exercise endorsed by the National Council of State during its meeting on Thursday at the State House, Abuja.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu also granted clemency to 82 inmates across the country, commuted seven death sentences to life imprisonment, and reduced the prison terms of 65 others.

The approvals followed recommendations from the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

The move is aimed at promoting justice reform, national reconciliation, and compassion within the Nigerian correctional system.
