The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan has adjourned until October 14 the adoption of written addresses in a suit filed by Kayode Bello, a postgraduate student of the University of Ibadan (UI), who is challenging the institution for allegedly denying him access to the students’ registration portal.

The case, filed in March 2024, revolves around Bello’s claim that the university authorities have been victimising him by refusing him access to the portal needed to complete his registration for a Master of Communication and Language Arts (CLA) degree.

After admitting all documents tendered by both parties, Justice Nkeonye Maha adjourned the matter to allow Bello—who is representing himself—and Mr. Ladapo Ladosu, counsel to the University of Ibadan, to file their written addresses.

It was recalled that on July 25, Ladosu had urged the court not to deliver judgment in the matter, arguing that neither he nor his client had been duly served with any court hearing notice.

Earlier in the proceedings, Bello told the court that despite paying all required fees, the university had continuously denied him access to the students’ portal necessary for his academic registration.

“My Lord, I was given admission for Master of Communication and Language Arts since 2021, but the authorities of University of Ibadan have bluntly refused to allow me gain access to the students’ portal to carry out the necessary registration,” Bello said.

“This is 2025, time waits for nobody, they want to destroy my career,” he lamented, alleging that his current ordeal was part of the victimisation he had faced in his academic journey.

He recalled his past experiences, stating, “This is the continuation of the victimisation I suffered at the Nigeria Law School when I protested insufficient seats for law students. Also, during my undergraduate days in University of Ibadan in 2008, I took part in a protest when there was an increment in school fees. I was suspended and ever since then, they have been on my neck.”

Bello further told the court that he was admitted into the postgraduate programme for Master of Communication and Language Arts at UI based on his Higher National Diploma (HND) qualification.

The court is expected to proceed with the adoption of written addresses on October 14 before delivering its judgment on the matter.
