Police Condemn Mob Attack on Woman Accused of Child Theft in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has condemned the mob action against a young woman accused of attempting to steal a two-year-old child in the Giri-Kpasere area of Gwagwalada.
According to eyewitnesses, the unidentified woman, dressed in a shirt and jeans trousers, was allegedly found by the roadside with a crying child while waiting to board a vehicle. Suspicion arose when a passerby recognized the child and called his name, prompting the child to respond and cry louder.
The man reportedly confronted the woman, leading to an alarm that attracted nearby residents. The crowd descended on the suspect, beating and partially stripping her before community elders intervened and handed her over to the police.
The mother of the child was later alerted and arrived at the scene, confirming the boy’s identity.
Reacting to the incident, the FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said officers from the Tungan Maje Division quickly arrived to rescue the woman from further assault.
Adeh described the mob action as “a condemnable act of jungle justice,” emphasizing that all criminal allegations must be handled through proper legal channels. She added that the suspect is currently in police custody while investigations continue.
