ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike After Fresh Assurances from Federal Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike following renewed commitments from the Federal Government to address the union’s long-standing demands.

The strike, which began on October 13, 2025, was originally scheduled to end on October 27. However, the union announced an early suspension on Wednesday, October 22, after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.

ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the decision at a press conference, stating that the union’s leadership considered recent government assurances and the intervention of the Senate before deciding to halt the industrial action.

“NEC resolved that the warning strike is hereby suspended with immediate effect. Should the government fail to address the issues within one month, ASUU reserves the right to return to its initial decision,” Piwuna said.

ASUU’s demands, which formed the basis of the strike, include the payment of withheld salaries, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances (EAA), release of third-party deductions, and revitalisation funding for public universities.

The union had embarked on the strike after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum, accusing the government of “persistent neglect and insincerity” in implementing key aspects of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

Professor Piwuna emphasized that the union would continue to monitor the Federal Government’s actions closely over the coming weeks to ensure that its renewed promises are fulfilled.
