Family Demands Justice After Guatemalan Mother Fatally Shot at Wrong Address in Indiana
The family of a Guatemalan woman who was fatally shot after reportedly going to the wrong home in Whitestown, Indiana, is calling for the shooter to be arrested and prosecuted.
According to a statement from the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department, investigators determined the incident was not a home invasion or burglary and confirmed it was an isolated case. Authorities say they are still working alongside Boone County prosecutors to determine whether a crime was committed.
“The loss of life is always a profound tragedy, and our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected,” the police said. The department urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.
“We respectfully ask the public to place their trust in the investigative process and refrain from sharing unverified information,” police added. “These cases are often complex and require time to fully understand. Misinformation can be harmful to those involved and to the integrity of the investigation.”
However, the victim’s brother, Rios, believes his sister was wrongfully k!lled and says her death reflects increasing hostility and racial profiling towards Latino immigrants.
“She had no bad intentions,” he said. “He could have given her a warning, but instead he k!lled her.”
Rios described his sister, Maria Florinda, as a loving, humble and joyful mother devoted to her children. The family is now raising funds to support her children and to return her body to Guatemala for burial.
“For the sake of my family, and because tomorrow there could be more victims like this, we want justice,” he said.
