Lagos Resident Dies After Jumping from Building During EFCC Sting Operation in Lekki Estate
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of a Lagos resident, identified as Endurance Udeke, who died during a sting operation at Periwinkle Estate, Lekki Phase 1, on Tuesday, November 4.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Commission said its operatives were at the estate to execute an operation targeting suspected internet fraud activities. According to the EFCC, the operation proceeded without incident in other apartments, and four suspects were arrested.
However, the Commission reported that Udeke and another resident in the same apartment attempted to evade arrest by jumping from the fourth floor of the building.
“Unfortunately, Udeke did not survive the fall despite medical efforts to save him. The second resident, however, survived after receiving treatment and being stabilized at the hospital,” the statement noted.
The EFCC stated that, as part of its protocol, Udeke’s family was immediately contacted and briefed on the events leading to his death. The Commission also emphasized that its operatives did not make contact with the deceased before he jumped.
“The Commission is shocked by the suicidal action of the deceased. There was no confrontation or physical engagement between EFCC officers and the deceased before the incident,” the statement added.
The agency confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police, who have commenced an investigation.
The EFCC advised the public to remain calm and reiterated that individuals with no involvement in criminal activities have no reason to fear its operations.
