FG Moves Nnamdi Kanu to Sokoto Prison After Life Sentence, IPOB Lawyer Raises Alarm

The Federal Government has transferred the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facility in Abuja to the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed the development on Friday in a post on X, expressing concern over the move. According to him, the IPOB leader—who had been held at the DSS facility since his arrest—was relocated to Sokoto, a location he described as “far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well-wishers.”

“Breaking: MAZI NNAMDI KANU has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility (prison) in Sokoto; so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well-wishers,” Ejimakor wrote.

The transfer comes a day after a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offences. Justice James Omotosho, who delivered the ruling on Thursday, November 20, convicted Kanu on all seven charges brought against him by the DSS.

While noting the severity of the offences, Justice Omotosho stated that the circumstances warranted a death sentence but said he opted for life imprisonment due to what he described as his “scriptural persuasion to be merciful.” He also faulted Kanu for showing no remorse throughout the trial.
