Public Outrage in Malawi as Minister’s Daughter Replaces Miss Malawi at Miss World 2026

Controversy has erupted in Malawi following a decision to send the daughter of a Cabinet minister to the Miss World pageant instead of the country’s reigning Miss Malawi.

Thandi Chisi, who won the Miss Malawi title and was crowned in Lilongwe on December 13, was initially expected to represent Malawi at the international competition.

However, organisers selected first runner-up Ireen Navicha, daughter of Malawi’s Cabinet Minister Mary Navicha, to represent the country at the Miss World pageant in Vietnam.

The decision has triggered criticism, with members of the public questioning the transparency and fairness of the selection process.

Organisers initially attributed Chisi’s replacement to her age, claiming she was above the eligibility limit for the Miss World competition.

The explanation, however, came under scrutiny after reports indicated that Chisi would still be 27 at the time of the pageant, which falls within the stated Miss World eligibility range of 17 to 27.

Following the backlash, the Miss Malawi Organisation apologised over the controversy. Its chief executive officer, Benedette Mweso, reportedly accepted “full responsibility for causing the age eligibility confusion.”

The pageant’s principal sponsor, Goshen City, offered a different explanation for the decision, saying it was part of a new approach aimed at creating opportunities for all finalists.

The sponsor also cited Navicha’s international experience as one of the factors behind her selection to represent Malawi at the global pageant.

The controversy has continued to fuel debate in Malawi over the selection process and whether contestants are being given equal opportunities to represent the country on the international stage.
