Singapore Man Jailed for Framing Wife with Cannabis Planting Plot

A Singaporean man, Tan Xianglong, 37, has been sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison for attempting to frame his estranged wife by planting cannabis in her car. Tan’s intention was to implicate her in a drug trafficking crime, which could have carried the death penalty in Singapore, known for its stringent anti-drug laws.

Tan planted over half a kilo of what he believed to be cannabis between the rear seats of his wife’s car. However, less than half of the substance turned out to be actual cannabis, with the rest being filler. His plot was foiled when his wife received a camera alert from her car, showing Tan near her vehicle. She reported him to the police, who initially arrested her but later shifted the investigation towards Tan.

The couple, married in 2021 and separated a year later, could not file for divorce due to Singapore’s requirement of a minimum of three years of marriage before eligibility for divorce. Tan’s plan was motivated by his belief that a criminal record for his wife could expedite the process.

Despite an attempt by his lawyer to claim Tan was suffering from depression, the court rejected this, citing medical assessments. Tan was given a reduced sentence after cooperating with the investigation and pleading guilty early in the trial.
