Troops of Operation Hadin Kai, working alongside local vigilantes, have killed 17 suspected terrorists and disrupted a major logistics operation in Borno State during a coordinated ambush carried out in the early hours of Sunday.

The Joint Task Force said the operation followed credible intelligence on the movement of supplies by suspected Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements.

In a statement, the Media Information Officer, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, said troops of Operation Hadin Kai, supported by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local hunters, were deployed to an interception point between Sojiri and Kayamla villages on the night of December 20.

“At about 2:24 a.m. on December 21, suspected terrorists riding bicycles arrived at the location conveying logistics materials, confirming earlier intelligence reports. Troops, positioned in concealed and coordinated formations, engaged them decisively,” the statement said.

Military sources said 17 insurgents were neutralised during the exchange, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.

Items recovered at the scene included several bicycles, assorted food items, drugs and medical supplies, detergents, clothing materials, torch lights, assorted weapons of different calibres and ammunition.

The military said the operation highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led and joint security efforts in degrading terrorist networks and disrupting their supply chains in the North-East.
