Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade, headquartered in Calabar, have rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, following the hijacking of a passenger boat en route from Nigeria to Cameroon.

The incident occurred on January 11, 2026, near Kombo Fishing Port in Cameroonian waters. According to the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters 13 Brigade, Major Yemi Sokoya, the rescue operation was launched after a distress call reported suspected sea pirates attacking the vessel using two speedboats and a wooden boat.

Troops deployed from Ikang swiftly responded and pursued the attackers. During the operation, an exchange of gunfire forced one of the pirates’ speedboats to capsize, prompting the criminals to abandon the passengers and flee into nearby creeks.

All 18 passengers were rescued unharmed.

Commending the operation, the Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P. O. Alimikhena, praised the troops for their courage and professionalism.

“This successful rescue operation demonstrates the bravery, professionalism and unwavering commitment of our personnel to protecting lives and ensuring the safety of our waterways,” he said.

Alimikhena added that the brigade would continue to dominate its operational environment and safeguard citizens against criminal elements. He also urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information to support security operations across Cross River State, stressing that community cooperation remains vital to sustaining peace and safety.

The rescue highlights the Nigerian Army’s continued efforts to secure regional waterways and protect civilians from maritime crime.
