Ghana has taken a major step to enhance its defence capabilities and national emergency response system with the procurement of four advanced helicopters from Airbus Helicopters.

The acquisition follows a contract awarded by the Ministry of Defence and includes two H175M multi-mission helicopters as well as two Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH) platforms — one ACH175 and one ACH160.

The new aircraft are expected to significantly boost Ghana’s capacity for search and rescue, emergency medical services, disaster relief and security operations, improving the country’s ability to respond swiftly to both civilian emergencies and defence-related missions.

Under the agreement, the government will fully fund the purchase over a four-year period, beginning with an initial payment of €62.5 million. Additional instalments are scheduled for May 2026, March 2027 and December 2028.

In a statement, Airbus Helicopters said the H175M helicopters will be used for transport, search and rescue, emergency medical services and disaster relief operations, offering greater operational flexibility for the Ghanaian authorities.

The procurement underscores Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its security infrastructure and improving emergency preparedness nationwide.
