Real Madrid have confirmed that club captain Dani Carvajal will depart at the end of the current season, drawing the curtain on a highly successful spell that established him as one of the most decorated players in the club’s modern history.

In an official statement released on Monday, May 18, the Spanish giants expressed deep appreciation for the 34-year-old defender, describing him as “one of the greatest legends of our club and world football.”

Carvajal, who came through Real Madrid youth system known as La Fábrica, made 450 appearances for the senior team and won 27 major trophies. His honours include six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga championships, cementing his place among the club’s most successful players.

After an early spell away from Madrid with Bayer Leverkusen in 2012, Carvajal returned the following year and quickly became a key figure in Real Madrid’s defence for more than a decade.

Club president Florentino Pérez paid tribute to the departing captain, calling him “a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy.”

Reports in Spain also suggest that injuries have disrupted Carvajal’s season, affecting his chances of featuring for the Spain national football team at the upcoming FIFA World Cup. National team coach Luis de la Fuente is reportedly unlikely to include him in the tournament squad.

Carvajal is expected to play his final match for Real Madrid this weekend at the Santiago Bernabéu against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, bringing an emotional end to a defining era in the club’s recent history.
