U.S. Embassy, Lagos Consulate to Close Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day
The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The embassy announced the closure in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that normal operations would resume after the public holiday.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” the statement read.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a U.S. federal holiday held annually to honour the late civil rights leader for his role in advancing equality and justice for Black Americans through nonviolent activism.
Dr. King, renowned for his historic “I Have a Dream” speech delivered in Washington, D.C., was born on January 15, 1929, and was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.
