Sudan Accuses RSF of Drone Attack on UN Food Aid Convoy in North Kordofan

The Sudanese government has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of launching a drone attack on a United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) humanitarian convoy in North Kordofan State, resulting in casualties and the destruction of vital relief supplies.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it described as a “criminal attack” carried out by the RSF militia on Friday, alleging that drones were used to target WFP trucks transporting food assistance to civilians.

According to the ministry, the convoy was delivering aid to communities in Allah Kareem, Es Samih, Al-Rahad and the city of Um Rawaba in North Kordofan when it was struck. The attack reportedly caused casualties and destroyed humanitarian materials, although exact figures were not initially disclosed.

The ministry said the targeting of relief convoys and humanitarian assets constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and represents a deliberate attempt to undermine efforts to deliver life-saving assistance to vulnerable civilians.

It added that the incident was part of a broader pattern of attacks aimed at obstructing humanitarian operations and using food deprivation as a tool of pressure against civilian populations.

Sudan’s government called on the international community to unequivocally condemn the attack and take concrete steps to ensure accountability for those responsible and their backers.

As of the time of reporting, the RSF had not issued a response to the allegations.

Meanwhile, the United States also condemned the drone strike. US Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, said the attack on the WFP convoy killed one person and injured three others, describing it as an assault on efforts to deliver food to famine-affected communities.

The incident comes amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the RSF. The RSF currently controls most of the Darfur region, while the army holds large parts of the south, north, east and central states, including the capital, Khartoum.

The war has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people, deepening one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
