Nigeria Warns South Africa Over Xenophobic Attacks, Threatens Diplomatic Sanctions
The Federal Government has warned South Africa to take immediate and decisive steps to end xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals or face possible diplomatic sanctions, including a review of bilateral relations.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikolaiye, issued the warning on Monday in Abuja during a meeting with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola.
Enikolaiye said the meeting was convened to address the recurring attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals residing in South Africa, describing the incidents as unacceptable.
He stressed that Nigeria and South Africa share longstanding diplomatic ties, recalling Nigeria’s significant contribution to South Africa’s liberation struggle.
The minister expressed concern over the persistent violence, noting that 98 Nigerians were reportedly killed in xenophobic attacks in 2022 alone.
“The future of Africa belongs to all of us. If there are issues fuelling these attacks, we must engage in dialogue and address them collectively,” he said.
Enikolaiye also disclosed that the Nigerian government had evacuated several of its citizens from South Africa due to repeated outbreaks of violence, which he said had affected women, children and other vulnerable groups.
He, however, maintained that Nigeria would not shield its citizens involved in criminal activities abroad, including drug trafficking, stressing that offenders must face the law.
In his remarks, Lamola said his visit was aimed at strengthening the longstanding relationship between both countries and reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to protecting all residents, regardless of nationality.
He conveyed the assurances of President Cyril Ramaphosa that the South African government remained committed to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens and foreign nationals.
Lamola added that authorities would ensure those responsible for xenophobic attacks and related violence were identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
