Greek authorities detained 313 people following a major police raid on a university campus in Thessaloniki after riot police were attacked with dozens of Molotov cocktails during overnight clashes.

According to police, groups of hooded individuals emerged from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the early hours of Saturday and launched coordinated attacks on a unit of riot police, hurling more than 100 firebombs at officers. The police unit is typically stationed near the campus to respond to disturbances linked to late-night gatherings and parties on university grounds.

In response, riot police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the attackers. One officer was hospitalised with burns to his face and leg, while a 21-year-old civilian was treated for respiratory complications, authorities said.

Police confirmed that all 313 people detained during the operation were later released without charges.

While clashes near the university are not uncommon, authorities said this was the first time such a large number of people had been detained in a single incident, particularly one involving the use of an unusually high number of Molotov cocktails.

In a statement, the university administration blamed “off-campus extremists,” working alongside individuals from within the campus community, for the violence. It said an investigation is underway to determine whether any students were involved and stressed that no permission had been granted for any party or gathering on university premises.

The incident has renewed concerns over campus security and recurring violence around university areas in Greece.
