Several people have been killed following a deadly shooting at a secondary school in Tumbler Ridge, a remote town in northern Canada, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said officers entered the school as part of an active shooter response and discovered multiple victims inside the building. An individual believed to be the shooter was also found dead, with what police described as an apparent self-inflicted injury.

In a statement, the RCMP said six people, excluding the suspect, were found dead inside the school. Two additional victims were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while a third victim died أثناء transportation to hospital.

“We are not in a place to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy,” Floyd said, adding that investigators are still working to determine how the victims were connected to the shooter.

The Peace River South School District earlier announced a “lockdown and secure and hold” at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School as the situation unfolded.

Larry Neufeld, the member of the legislature for Peace River South, said an “excess” deployment of emergency resources, including RCMP officers and ambulance services, had been sent to the community. He declined to release further details, citing concerns about the safety of the ongoing operation.

Tumbler Ridge, located more than 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver near the Alberta border, has a population of about 2,400 people. According to the provincial government website, Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has approximately 175 students across Grades 7 to 12.

School shootings remain rare in Canada, making the incident a profound shock to the small community.
