The Secretary-General of the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, Sohail Mahmood, has raised alarm over a sharp rise in global conflicts, warning that escalating violence is threatening both political stability and economic resilience worldwide.

In an interview, Mahmood said the number of ongoing conflicts has reached unprecedented levels, with at least 54 military confrontations currently taking place. He noted that more than 100 countries are directly or indirectly involved, underscoring the scale and complexity of the current global security landscape.

He cautioned that the surge in conflicts is placing immense strain on the global economy, particularly in the area of energy security. According to him, disruptions in the energy sector have far-reaching consequences, affecting communication, transportation, and international trade.

Describing the current period as highly dangerous, Mahmood emphasized that sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy rather than military action.

“No dispute can be permanently settled through military means,” he said, stressing the need for renewed commitment to peaceful negotiation.

Mahmood also highlighted the growing role of Türkiye in global peacebuilding efforts, praising its active involvement in mediation across multiple regions. He pointed to Türkiye’s role in facilitating the Black Sea Grain Deal between Russia and Ukraine, as well as its diplomatic engagements in Africa and efforts to encourage dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

He further acknowledged Ankara’s ongoing contributions to easing tensions in the Middle East, noting that its mediation initiatives have become increasingly significant in the current geopolitical climate.

Calling for stronger international cooperation, Mahmood urged the global community to support diplomatic initiatives and countries working toward peaceful resolutions.

“The world must support all efforts aimed at peace,” he said. “Diplomacy, not warfare, remains the only sustainable path forward.”

His remarks highlight growing concerns over the global rise in armed conflicts and reinforce the urgency of prioritizing dialogue to ensure long-term stability and economic recovery.
