The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the commencement of a nationwide ward-level enrollment exercise for the National Identification Number (NIN), scheduled to begin on Monday, February 16, 2026.

The initiative, according to the commission, follows a presidential directive mandating the expansion of NIN registration to the grassroots to ensure wider inclusion of Nigerians and legal residents in the National Identity Database.

In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC said the ward-level registration is designed to achieve comprehensive enrollment of all citizens and legal residents, covering both adults and children. The exercise will be conducted free of charge across the country.

The commission noted that the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises inclusive governance, national development and improved access to essential public services.

Describing the initiative as a major step towards decentralising identity services, NIMC said the rollout will bring registration centres closer to communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas, thereby reducing travel challenges and encouraging broader participation.

As part of preparations, the commission disclosed that it has begun extensive engagement with stakeholders at the national, state and local government levels, alongside ongoing sensitisation and awareness campaigns to educate the public on the importance of NIN registration.

It added that state governments, local councils, traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations and faith-based organisations are being consulted to ensure smooth implementation of the exercise across all wards nationwide.

NIMC urged Nigerians and legal residents who are yet to enroll to take advantage of the opportunity, encouraging families to register their children, parents and wards during the exercise.

The commission said the ward enrollment schedule, which will guide the rotational deployment of licensed front-end partners and NIMC officials, is available on its website, www.nimc.gov.ng.

For inquiries, assistance or complaints, members of the public can contact the commission through its toll-free line: 08000616462.

NIMC reaffirmed its commitment to expanding national identity coverage and strengthening the national database as a foundation for effective planning, service delivery and economic inclusion.
