UK to Introduce eVisa-Only System from Feb 25, 2026, Phasing Out Paper Visas

The United Kingdom has announced a major overhaul of its visa regime, confirming that from February 25, 2026, all visitors who require visas will be issued electronic visas (eVisas) only, ending the use of paper-based visa documents.

The development was disclosed by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) in a post on X, where it stated that eligible travellers will now receive digital visas and must create a UKVI account to access them online before travelling.

“From 25 February 2026, visitors to the UK who need a visa will get an eVisa only. Create your UKVI account and view your eVisa before you travel to the UK,” the notice read.

According to the UK government, an eVisa is a digital record of a person’s identity and immigration status, showing the type of visa or permission granted—such as settlement status—and the conditions attached, including the right to work or study.

Authorities explained that the new system is part of a broader digital transition, with eVisas replacing physical immigration documents. Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) have already been phased out, while Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs), passport vignette stickers, and wet-ink stamps will also be discontinued.

Under the new arrangement, travellers will receive an eVisa once their application to enter or remain in the UK is approved. Users will be able to access their eVisa online and generate a share code to prove their immigration status for purposes such as employment, housing, or services.

The government also clarified that travellers must ensure their passport or travel document details are linked to their eVisa before departure. Creating a UKVI account and accessing the eVisa, it added, is free of charge.
