The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained why it is yet to arraign former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in court following his interrogation over alleged corruption.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that El-Rufai was held in EFCC custody for two nights, between February 16 and 18, 2026, after honouring the commission’s invitation over allegations of financial misconduct.

A source within the commission disclosed that investigations into the allegations against the former governor are still ongoing, explaining that this is why he has not yet been charged to court.

According to the source, the EFCC is determined to carry out a thorough and professional investigation rather than rushing the case to court.

“We are still investigating the former governor and have not concluded our investigations before his release on bail last Wednesday.

“Although he was taken into custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) immediately after we released him, we will continue our investigations once he is done with the ICPC.

“He will be charged to court after the completion of our investigations into the various allegations levelled against him,” the source said.

El-Rufai was initially detained by the EFCC from Monday, February 16, after honouring its invitation, until the night of Wednesday, February 18, when he was released on administrative bail. He was, however, subsequently taken into custody by the ICPC.

One of his aides, Muyiwa Adekeye, had earlier stated that the former governor had spent several days in the custody of the two anti-graft agencies.

Adekeye also disclosed that El-Rufai’s legal team had not received any response from the ICPC to a bail application submitted on his behalf, adding that no remand order had been shown to them to justify his continued detention beyond the constitutionally stipulated 48-hour period without formal charges.
