Tinubu Hails Obasanjo at 89, Praises His Service to Nigeria, Africa
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, commending his decades of service and enduring contributions to Nigeria and the African continent.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the president described Obasanjo as an influential statesman whose impact extends beyond Nigeria to Africa and the global community.
Tinubu praised the former leader’s courage, sacrifices and commitment to national development, recalling his tenure as military Head of State between 1976 and 1979, when he oversaw the transition to civilian rule and handed over power in 1979.
He also highlighted Obasanjo’s return to leadership as Nigeria’s first civilian president in the Fourth Republic, serving from 1999 to 2007, noting his role in strengthening democracy and preserving national unity.
The president further acknowledged Obasanjo’s imprisonment during the military era for opposing authoritarian rule, as well as his continued advocacy for democratic governance and Africa’s political and economic advancement.
“As Chief Obasanjo turns 89, we recognise the zeal and wisdom he continues to bring to Nigeria’s development,” Tinubu stated.
He also commended the elder statesman’s intellectual contributions through books and public commentary, praying for continued good health, strength and wisdom for him in the years ahead.
