A cargo vessel has been struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the second such incident reported within hours in the strategic shipping route, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

In an advisory issued on Wednesday, the UK-based maritime security monitoring centre said a bulk carrier was hit about 50 nautical miles northwest of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

The vessel’s master reportedly alerted UKMTO after the ship was struck by the unidentified projectile.

The agency said there were no reports of environmental damage from the incident, and the crew on board the vessel were safe and unharmed.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, while ships navigating the area have been urged to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.

The incident followed another report earlier the same day of a cargo ship being hit by an unknown projectile in the same waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, carrying about 20 million barrels of oil daily. Any disruption in the channel can significantly affect global energy markets.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated since joint attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran on February 28, which have reportedly resulted in more than 1,200 deaths, including Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
