Cuba has pardoned more than 2,000 prisoners following a nationwide legal review, authorities confirmed on Thursday, describing the move as a humanitarian gesture during Holy Week.

According to officials, 2,101 inmates were granted clemency in accordance with constitutional provisions after assessments of their offences, conduct in prison, time already served, and health conditions. The measure prioritised young offenders, women, and prisoners over the age of 60, as well as those nearing eligibility for early release within six to 12 months.

The pardon also extends to foreign nationals and Cuban citizens residing abroad. However, individuals convicted of serious crimes—including homicide, sexual offences, violent crimes against minors, armed robbery, drug-related offences, and crimes against state authority—were excluded. Repeat offenders and those previously pardoned who reoffended were also not considered.

This marks the fifth such amnesty by the Cuban government since 2011, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to over 11,000.

Separately, thousands of young people marched in the capital, Havana, during the “Here, with Fidel” Anti-Imperialist Youth Parade. The event, organised by the Union of Young Communists and the José Martí Pioneer Organisation, highlighted opposition to the long-standing United States embargo and reaffirmed support for Cuba’s socialist system and national sovereignty.

The rally was attended by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, alongside senior officials including Prime Minister Manuel Marrero and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.

Speaking at the event, youth leader Meyvis Estévez declared that Cuba’s dignity remains “non-negotiable” amid continued pressure from the United States.
